PNC Secures Super Majority in Parliament

Share

The ruling coalition, People's National Congress (PNC), has secured a supermajority in the recent parliamentary elections.

Preliminary results indicate that the PNC has won the majority of representative positions, totaling 71 out of the 93 constituencies.

Many incumbent parliamentarians faced defeat, including notable figures such as the sitting Speaker of Parliament, Mohamed Aslam, and Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Ahmed Saleem. These seats are now held by the PNC.

The opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) suffered significant losses, losing many seats they had held for years, both as the ruling party and in opposition. Key constituencies in Addu City and Male' City, previously led by the MDP, were secured by the PNC. Additionally, the PNC won all seats in Fuvahmulah City and Kulhudhuffushi constituencies.

According to preliminary results, the MDP, which previously held the majority of seats in Parliament, won only 12 seats. Furthermore, no ministers from the MDP government secured seats in the parliamentary election.

The three parties allied with the current administration—Maldives Development Alliance (MDA), Maldives National Party (MNP), and Jumhooree Party—also won some seats, with each party's leader securing a seat. The MDA secured two seats, while the Adhaalath Party and The Democrats did not win any seats.

Preliminary results also suggest that several independent candidates secured seats in the parliamentary elections.
